The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The anticipation around The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

A Different Direction

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This choice of words suggests that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and deep class systems—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully flexible, allowing players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
