Trumpism's most revealing and defining occasions – not its most significant, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of a few weeks, the US president began displaying all observers his intentions for an ornate dance hall two times larger than the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the eastern section to build it.
He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of deaths resulting from his reductions to international aid amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and presently an analysis predicted his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No previous president would have risked – really, no previous leader would have conceived – solo demolishing significant portions of the executive mansion in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of some of the richest Americans, nearly all of which conduct transactions with public institutions.

As disorienting as it is to watch the president try to upend the traditional concept regarding democracy and replace it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who should not find it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – among senior generations close to half – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched throughout the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we learned about into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Essentially, they turned a figure of affection into an icon of animosity who approves specifically the brutality that he condemned in biblical teachings; this has happened at a slower pace, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disturbing through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
Therefore allow me to outline the Savior from my upbringing, because theoretically Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and given that the fastest-growing cadre of Americans could have minimal awareness of him since they are non-believers or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of great price in the Christian story.
It is unquestionably not the story of a powerful ruler arising; rather, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to another nation to escape covert authorities. The infant develops in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his teaching concerns compassion for fellow humans, specifically for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to turn the opposite cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a method to instruct the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever an individual takes your outer garment you ought to provide the person your additional clothing as well.
The apparent and straightforward fact that the Savior of the gospels requests a type of radical love centered on the impoverished has consistently rendered the Christian faith rather a controversial faith: appealing to the populace, but because of its natural unconventionality needing to be contained. In the fifties it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so dominant that it basically sanctified existing conditions.
A Conflict for the Finest of Us
Hence I have become heartened to see the steadfast resistance to Trump develop during the previous year. It has served as significant comfort to participate in developing the campaign that has protested openly in rally after rally, and appears to have motivated electorate to turn out in large quantities in interim political contests. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags throughout each rally and appeals to the finest aspects of American history.

America is best defended, in other words, by relationship to the finest about American history, exactly as the Christian faith is best defended by relationship to elements that cause it to be special and magnificent, particularly the pattern of Jesus. In neither case does it mean pretending the worst about the nation and Christian faith never occurred; it means both modesty and faith, a blend that committed US believers ought to accept.
